When last we left off I was in just starting my trip and I covered Beijing. There is not a lot of time to write, because every day is an adventure from the time I wake till bed. This post will have little bits and pieces from the first two weeks in china in no particular order. I will start with the breakfast street “tacos” in Beijing were great, and I had one every day that I could find one, even though I was not sure of what was in them. The adventures walking in china were fun, we were half lost sometimes and I couldn’t read any signs or talk to anyone, I loved it. Shanghai was fun and we wandered till dark and then it was time for the light show. Every big building has lights on it some are a movie and some just flashing lights. In Hong Kong they have the worlds largest laser light show with the buildings and music, we watched across the bay from Hong Kong Island.
In china the subway is easy to navigate and we got around with no problems. The food was the fun part. I had no clue what I was ordering most of the time and I called it the Food Lotto, I only lost the Food Lotto twice, not bad odds considering we dined out for every meal. So this is how it works I would walk in and ask for a menu, if it is in Chinese with no photos we would move on to the next place, but if it had photos we would find something that looks good and enter the food lotto. Sometimes the menu would be in english but that did not change the lotto effect. It is only the name and you have no clue what you will get.
Our destinations are not the only adventure, the travel between towns is also part of the adventure. We were on the high-speed train the first leg from Beijing to Shanghai, this was a soft sleeper with four bunks in a room (That was the good life). The second two trains were were normal speed and hard sleepers. That is a triple bunk bed with no door so people are walking by all the time. We had the top bunks and only 2 foot to the ceiling. The ladies on the bottom were talkative and we joined in the fun and the little baby boy loved me.
When we landed in Hong Kong it was more like New York then China. Lots of westerners and many people speak english and I started to miss mainland China. In Hong Kong we took the trolly from start to finish for $.40. It was a great way to see the city for cheap. To this point we have only seen the sun 2 days cold and rain is the normal, but that will not stop adventures. There is so much That happened in the two weeks in china I wish I could write about it all. I guess you will have to ask me about it next time we talk.
